8563 - POLICE LEVELS IN WALLSEND

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Police, and Minister for Emergency Services

Considering the latest NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) statistics show that the level of stealing from motor vehicle incidents are three times higher than the State average, what is being done to ensure Wallsend has appropriate levels of Police to deal with the ongoing increase in crime in Wallsend?

Answer -

I am advised:

All police positions attached to Police Districts or Police Area Commands are flexible resources available to respond to incidents. These local resources are also supplemented by specialist police who are managed centrally but can be deployed across boundaries to respond to changing community needs, crime patterns and emerging issues.

I have already announced that 100 new police officers will be deployed later this year. In addition to these extra officers, the Government is working with the Commissioner and other key stakeholders to determine how many additional officers are needed, what duty types are required and where they will be based.

As you would be aware, decisions about the deployment of police officers and other resources are ultimately made by the Commissioner, independent of Government.
