2173 - WHOOPING COUGH VACCINE PROGRAM

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Health, and Minister for Medical Research
  1. Why is there a review of the whooping cough vaccine program that allows parents, grandparents and carers of infants under 12 months of age free access to the vaccine?
  2. When will the results of the review be released?
Answer -

I am advised:

  1. NSW Health commenced a review of the whooping cough program for carers of infants under 12 months of age for a number of reasons. These include the 2011 assessment by the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee that adult whooping cough vaccines for new parents had uncertain clinical effectiveness and highly uncertain cost effectiveness, and the declining whooping cough epidemic in NSW.
Until more definitive evidence from its research is available, NSw Health will refocus funding of the vaccine on new mothers soon after the birth of the child.
  2. The results of the review were released on 22 June 2012.
