4036 - GREYHOUND TRANSITION TASKFORCE MEETING

  1. How many individuals attended the meeting of the Greyhound Transition Taskforce held at The Gardens Greyhound Racing Club on 19 August 2016?

Answer -

(1) Approximately 20 people attended.

(2) The Coordinator General of the Taskforce, Dr John Keniry AM, provided information on the proposed transition dates under consideration by the Taskforce for non-racing activities, such as breeding, training and keeping greyhounds. Dr Keniry also provided information on the assistance measures being considered by the Taskforce.

(3) Participants at the meeting raised a number of concerns, including in relation to:

  • the greyhound racing closure date and the cessation of other activities, including breeding, rearing and training;
  • appropriate arrangements for the care of their dogs once racing ceases;
  • the ability of clubs and businesses to transition.

(4) On 11 October, the Government announced it will give the greyhound racing industry one more chance in NSW, subject to it agreeing to the strictest regulations to clamp down on animal cruelty.

The Greyhound Industry Reform Panel, chaired by former Premier Morris Iemma and with representatives from industry and the RSPCA, will determine the new regime. It will ensure that New South Wales greyhound racing has the strictest regulatory guidelines in the country and prioritises animal welfare.Subject to the Panel's recommendations, legislation will be introduced early in 2017 to repeal the ban on greyhound racing and establish the new regulatory regime.
