3716 - SEWER WORKS IN WYEE

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Water, Property and Housing

(1) Were Hunter Water customers surveyed before almost $30 million was committed to sewer the suburb of Wyee?

(2) Was there a legislative requirement to complete those works?

(3) Were these works extended beyond the initial commitment of Hunter Water?

Answer -

(1) I am advised that Hunter Water is currently delivering the Wyee Sewer Scheme consistent with the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART)'s 1997 Determination of Backlog Sewer Charges which applied at the time the Scheme was initiated. The Scheme was prioritised based on environmental and public health benefits, including advice from the NSW Environment Protection Authority, NSW Health and Lake Macquarie City Council. The Wyee Sewer Scheme will provide a reticulated sewer service to 400 presently unsewered properties.

(2) The Scheme is being delivered in accordance with relevant Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal Determinations, made under the Hunter Water Act 1991 and Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal Act 1992.

(3) I am advised that in anticipation of growth in southern Lake Macquarie, Hunter Water has upgraded the transfer infrastructure for the Wyee Scheme to cater for 2,750 new homes in the broader Wyee area. The upgrade in transfer infrastructure does not impact the backlog sewer components of the Wyee Sewer Scheme.
