3266 - EDUCATORS IN THE WALLSEND ELECTORATE

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education representing the Minister for Education and Early Childhood Learning

(1) Considering the Government's decision to freeze the wages of New South Wales public servants, how many educators in the Wallsend electorate will be impacted?

(2) How much less money will they be able to spend in the local economy?

Answer -

The Government's proposed 12 month pause on pay rises, which will apply prospectively, protects the 408,000 New South Wales public service jobs and will save the New South Wales taxpayers around $3 billion over four years.

The Public Sector Salaries award covering public service employees of the Department of Education is currently before the Industrial Relations Commission for determination.

The majority of Department staff are teachers and school administrative and support staff (SASS) covered by existing awards. The new wages policy will not affect these employment groups until their awards are renegotiated. These employees will receive salary increases in accordance with current awards, due for teachers in January 2021 and for SASS in July 2020 and 2021.
