2986 - WALLSEND ELECTORATE VULNERABLE CHILDREN PROTECTION

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services

Considering that out of 11,103 risk of serious harm reports in the Hunter Region in 2019 only 2,808 were followed up with in-person caseworker meetings, according to the December 2019 quarter Caseworker Dashboard data from the Department of Family and Community Services, what assurances can be made that vulnerable children in Wallsend are not being left in dangerous circumstances?

Answer -

I am advised that reports to the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) are responded to in a range of ways, including referral to appropriate services. DCJ and other government departments such as NSW Health and Education and local Non-Governmental Organisations' work with families to respond to and reduce risk to children. Programs such as Multi-systemic Therapy - Child Abuse and Neglect, located in Edgeworth and delivered by OzChild are achieving excellent results and available to families in Wallsend.
