140 - JOHN HUNTER HOSPITAL SURGERY

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Health

With reference to the Australian Medical Association's Public Hospital Report Card regarding the doubling of wait times for Ear, Nose and Throat surgery at John Hunter Hospital from 42 days to 84 days, what steps is the Government taking to address this issue?

Answer -

I am advised:

The AMA Public Hospital Report Card assesses the performance of public hospitals year on year, and their capacity to meet the community's need for hospital services, using data published by the Commonwealth.

The AMA's Public Hospital Report Card only looks at the states and territories as whole. Therefore statistics relating to John Hunter Hospital are not available in the Australian Medical Association's Public Hospital Report Card.

Relevant statistics on the John Hunter Hospital can be found in the Bureau of Health Information Quarterly Report into Acute Emergency and Surgery Performance (Jan-March 2015) which reported the average wait for ear, nose and throat surgery at John Hunter Hospital was 36 days, down from 59 days in the Jan-March 2011 quarter.
