3987 - CHILD ABUSE VICTIMS COMPENSATION CLAIMS

Hornery, Sonia to the Premier, and Minister for Western Sydney
  1. How much money will the Government save by requiring child abuse victims to lodge compensation claims within a decade of turning 18 or 10 years of the crime being committed?
  2. How much money would the Government save if it imposed a 20 year time limit as preferred by the Victims Compensation Tribunal?
Answer -

I am advised:

  1. Under the Victims Support Scheme there are no time limits within which victims of child sexual assault must lodge applications for recognition payments; applications for out of pocket expenses up to $5000; or applications for expenses of up to $5000 associated with criminal proceedings relating to the act of violence. Victims of child sexual assault will be able to make such applications for victims support at any time regardless of how long ago the abuse took place.
The budget allocation of $72 million per annum for the Victims Support Scheme will be the same as that under the previous Victims Compensation Scheme. This amount will not be reduced.
  2. As mentioned above, the budget for the Victims Support Scheme will be maintained at the current levels of $72 million per annum.
