1100 - FREE RAGE STOCKING DENSITIES

  1. What is the recommended maximum stocking density for free range laying hens in NSW?
  2. If there is no maximum stocking density, why not?
  3. What is the Government's response to the Australian Egg Corporation working towards establishing a cap on free range stocking densities to two birds per metre square, which equates to 20,000 hens per hectare, given the current acceptable density is 1,500 per hectare?
Answer -

(1) and (2) Please refer to the Australian Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals, Domestic Poultry, 4th Edition (the Code).

(3) The Australian Egg Corporation has been working to develop an industry owned and run quality assurance program (QAP) for consideration by industry stakeholders. Any stocking density will need to comply with legislated requirements.
