5710 - STATISTICS FOR TAFE ENROLMENTS

  1. Considering the response to LA Q4548, could you please:
    1. Provide the sources of the statistics you cited;
    2. Elucidate the claim that the increase in TAFE enrolments since January 2016 was due to Government policy changes?
Answer -
  1. The sources of the statistics cited by the Minister for Skills in his response to LA Q4548 were TAFE NSW data, National Centre for Vocational Education Research VOCSTATS and Australian Bureau of Statistics Labour Force statistics.

  2. A number of Government policy changes to the Smart and Skilled program led to strong growth in enrolments in 2016. These included:

    • the introduction of fully subsidised part qualifications and skill-sets to assist people in New South Wales to undertake entry level qualifications, get the skills they need to get jobs, or, transition to new jobs

    • introduction of Fee Free Scholarships for students from disadvantaged target groups, and

    • changes to eligibility criteria and fee waivers.
