2895 - WET WIPES IN SEWERS

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy representing the Minister for Primary Industries, and Minister for Lands and Water

Considering the recent Hunter Water report indicating problems that have arisen due to clusters of wet wipes clogging sewer pipes across New South Wales, what action is the Minister taking to warn our community against placing wet wipes in sewers?

Answer -

DPI Water and NSW water utilities are preparing a brochure on 'wet wipes' to inform regional customers on how to avoid costly blockages of house drains and the utility's sewers.

Since May 2015 Sydney Water has been running its 'Keep wipes out of the Pipes' education program, which has reached nearly one million people on social media and

over 12 million people through traditional media stories.

Hunter Water has been actively advising consumers of the impacts of wet wipes, including through information included with water bills, on-hold call centre telephone messaging, in traditional and social media, and in targeted advertising in public toilets.
