The Government is committed to reducing the impact that Ice has on the
people and communities of New South Wales. The Government's Ice Package
election commitments encompass a coordinated effort across Government and with
the non-Government sector, to address each of the three pillars of the National
Drug Strategy the reduction of supply, demand and harm:
- reducing supply through law enforcement and precursor controls;
- reducing demand by educating people on the dangers of illicit drug use;
- reducing harm by providing effective treatment, rehabilitation, and
promoting safe practices for those who use and those who have become
addicted.
To reduce supply, the Government will tighten controls on pseudoephedrine,
one of the main precursors used to make Ice, and bring in tougher penalties for
the distribution and sale of Ice.
To reduce demand we are launching a campaign to educate the people of New
South Wales on the dangers of Ice use. The NSW Police Force and Crime Stoppers
have recently launched a new advertising campaign to encourage people to give
information about drug supply to Crime Stoppers.
To reduce harm and get users off Ice, the Government has committed to
investing in new stimulant treatment services, and pledged an additional
funding for the non-government sector to enhance local drug and alcohol
rehabilitation services, especially in rural and regional communities.
To reduce drug driving, the NSW Police Force plans to triple the number of
roadside drug tests by 2016-17.
New South Wales is also working closely with the National Ice Taskforce on
this issue.
