I am advised that:
- The most recent data available indicates that the total gross cost of
treating smoking-related illnesses to the health care system of NSW in the
period 1998⁄99 is estimated at $801.2 million. This data was derived from
the Collins D.J. and Lapsley H.M report, Counting the costs of tobacco and the
benefits of reducing smoking prevalence in New South Wales, 2005. This
report is available on the NSW Health Website at:
www.health.nsw.gov.au⁄pubs⁄2005⁄smoking_reduction.html
- The information requested is not readily available. To provide the
level of detail requested would be resource intensive and the diversion of
public resources necessary to answer this question cannot be justified on this
occasion.
