Hornery, Sonia to the Attorney General, and Minister for Justice representing the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Minister for the Hunter, and Vice-President of the Executive Council
  1. Does the Newcastle City Local Area Command have any staff dedicated to liaising with members of the public who have been the victim of sexual abuse?
  2. If so, how many staff members carry out this role?
  3. How long have they been doing so?
Answer -

The NSW Police Force has advised me that Detectives attached to the Newcastle City Local Area Command (LAC) provide victim care and liaison when sexual abuse complaints are received, and throughout subsequent investigations.

Sexual assault investigations routinely include referral to support services including Hunter New England Local Health District and where relevant, other local services such as sexual assault counsellors.

Additionally, the Child Abuse Squad attached to the State Crime Command has an office in Newcastle staffed with officers who provide assistance to victims of sexual and other abuse aged 16 and under.
