3941 - INDIGENOUS STUDENT SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Education

Considering the release of the 2016 'Closing the Gap' report, what is the Government doing to improve indigenous student school attendance?

Answer -

Under the Department of Education's School Attendance Policy, encouraging the regular attendance of all students, including Aboriginal students, is a core school responsibility. Schools across NSW, with support from 110 Home School Liaison Officers and 26 Aboriginal Student Liaison Officers, monitor the regular attendance of students and develop strategies to support students with attendance issues through school Learning and Support Teams.

Personal Learning Pathways is a specific strategy to monitor the attendance of Aboriginal students, with individualised actions developed in partnership with Aboriginal students, their parents or carers and teachers, when and where required.

Three schools participate in the Remote Schools Attendance Strategy, which includes the employment of School Attendance Monitors and Officers who work with families, communities and schools to improve attendance.
