9208 - AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN THE WALLSEND ELECTORATE

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Planning, Minister for Housing, and Special Minister for State
  1. How many affordable housing properties has the Government provided in the Wallsend electorate in each financial year from 2010-11 to 2017-18?
  2. What is the Government doing to provide affordable housing in the Wallsend electorate?
Answer -

(1) The New South Wales planning system facilitates affordable housing through the State Environmental Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) 2009 (ARHSEPP) and State Environmental Planning Policy No. 70-Affordable Housing (Revised Schemes) (SEPP 70). Delivery of affordable housing is primarily by the private sector including by community housing providers.

Between 2011-12 and 2016-17 financial years approximately 156 development applications and complying development applications may have been determined under the ARHSEPP within Wallsend. By year:

Year Number of determinations
2011-12 13
2012-13 19
2013-14 130
2014-15 21
2015-16 28
2016-17 145
Total 156

Figures for 2017-18 are not available. The above figures include affordable rental housing, boarding houses, group homes and secondary dwellings.

*Note: This data has been manually compiled from a number of sources; one of which is the Local Development Performance Monitor which presents information provided by councils on local and regional development. The data sources are of varying reliability and comprehensiveness and cannot be relied upon as representative. Nonetheless, as the only data available, this provides some indication of what may be being delivered under the State Environmental Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) 2009.

The Government continues to investigate initiatives to deliver more affordable housing. Examples include Communities Plus, a Government program being delivered by Land and Housing Corporation and the Social and Affordable Housing Fund which provides an innovative approach to the delivery of social and affordable housing. Further detail on these could be provided by the Department of Family and Community Services.

(2) The Government is committed to increasing housing supply and making housing more affordable.

The New South Wales planning system facilitates affordable housing through the State Environmental Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) 2009 (ARHSEPP) and State Environmental Planning Policy No. 70-Affordable Housing (Revised Schemes) (SEPP 70).

These existing policies have delivered affordable rental housing and other specialist housing types in the Newcastle electorate (see figures above).

These and other housing-related policies are currently being reviewed by the Department of Planning and Environment to ensure they reflect current needs and community expectations.
