3126 - REGISTERED NURSES IN AGED CARE

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Health
  1. Will patients be kept waiting for pain relief if registered nurses will not be employed around the clock in aged care in New South Wales?
    1. If not, who will be qualified to provide immediate pain relief to sick patients?
Answer -

A range of state controls are already in place, linked to existing Commonwealth standards, to ensure prompt pain relief is available to residents.

Accreditation Standards for residential care facilities under the Commonwealth Quality of Care Principles 2014 also include standards requiring that 'all care recipients are as free as possible from pain'. Care workers are currently able to supply Schedule 2 or unscheduled pain medicines.
