7349 - SCHOOL BUS SERVICES IN THE NEWCASTLE AREA

  1. How many school bus services in the Newcastle area were cancelled or otherwise did not arrive at schools they were scheduled to service in each financial year from 2014-15 to 2016-17?

  2. How many students ride dedicated school buses in Newcastle daily?

  3. In the event of a cancelled school service or when a service does not arrive, what procedures are in place to ensure students get home safely?

Answer -

I am advised:

  1. One in the period 2014-15 to 2016-17.
  2. On an average day approximately 1,800 students tap onto a dedicated school service with a School Opal card in Newcastle and eastern Lake Macquarie.
  3. Newcastle Transport's operations centre monitors school bus services. Schools are contacted if buses are more than 15 minutes late. Schools have also been provided with a direct number to contact the Newcastle Transport operations team, if they experience any issues with dedicated school services.
