  1. Why are there no palliative care staff specialists based at Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital?
  2. Are there plans to rectify this situation?
    1. If so, when?
    2. If not, why not?
  3. Will funding for existing palliative care services in the Hunter Region be maintained or increased?
Answer -

I am advised:

  1. to (3) John Hunter Hospital benefits from the expertise of Hunter New England Local Health District's Palliative Care Network. Palliative Care specialists are on-call 24-hours-day and regularly visit the John Hunter Hospital to provide support and advice.
    For those patients with more complex needs who require specialist palliative care, the Calvary Mater Newcastle's Palliative Care Unit is available for phone consultation 24 hours per day and inpatient review once per week.
    The District's Cancer Network is considering a range of options to support palliative care services at John Hunter Hospital.
