10086 - FOOD INSECURITY IN NEW SOUTH WALES

Considering Wallsend residents are amongst the many Australians being forced to rely on food banks and food insecurity is increasing due to cost of living pressures and underemployment, what is being done to address this growing crisis?

Answer -

The Government is working to ease cost of living pressures across the State with 40 programs available through Service NSW Centres.

As you are aware, under the former Labor Government of which you were a member:

  • Water and sewerage bills in Sydney were the second highest in the country. They are now the lowest.
  • Due to Labor's policies, in the five years to 2013, electricity network prices rose by 158 per cent. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has confirmed that New South Wales electricity prices are the lowest of any mainland state.
  • Labor Introduced 11 new taxes and increased taxes 21 times. We have abolished over six taxes and charges and also three times lifted the threshold for payroll tax
  • In Labor's last five years, public transport prices rose 3.1 per cent a year on average. Under our Opal Card fares have increased by less than consumer price index (CPI) .
