777 - TEMPORARY GAOL FACILITIES

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Corrections, Minister for Emergency Services, and Minister for Veterans Affairs

Are there any incidents where people are being kept in temporary gaol facilities with no natural light and limited shower access in the Hunter?

(a) If so, where?

(b) If so, how many?

Answer -

I am advised:

Corrective Services NSW (CSNSW) does not have any temporary gaol facilities in the Hunter region. Offenders from the Hunter region remanded into the custody of CSNSW are held in the Newcastle Police Cells Complex on a short term basis for court appearances. If an offender is sentenced or is remanded in custody they are transferred to a correctional centre.

These cells, including at Newcastle, are located in enclosed areas. These cells have fully functional toilets, running water, and inmates are afforded showers and out-of-cell time where possible.
