1593 - DEDICATED OFF ROAD CYCLEWAYS IN THE HUNTER

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Transport representing the Minister for Roads and Ports
  1. What steps are the Government taking to increase a network of dedicated off-road cycleways in the Hunter and therefore reduce car use on Hunter roads?
  2. What are the details and how much funding will be provided for the project?
Answer -

I am advised:

  1. Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is currently assisting Newcastle City Council with the development of Regional Cycle Route R6, which has been identified as a council and community priority.
Route R6 is 11 kilometres long and includes on-road and off-road cycleways from Newcastle West to Wallsend in the western suburbs. The route passes along Newcastle Harbour foreshore, through Honeysuckle, Wickham, Newcastle TAFE at Tighes Hill and through suburbs of Mayfield, Waratah, Waratah West, Callaghan (Newcastle University), Jesmond and Wallsend.
  2. During 2011-12, $275,000 has been allocated to install traffic control signals for the Throsby Creek section's crossing of Hannell Street, Wickham. This was identified by both council and bicycle user groups as a high priority. At present, pedestrians and cyclists have to cross four lanes of traffic on Hannell Street, and these traffic control signals will improve safety for path users.
Also on R6, RMS is investigating with Newcastle City Council and the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) the feasibility of an off-road cycleway within the rail corridor at Mayfield West.
During 2011-12, RMS has also allocated $100,000 towards investigations into an Adamstown to Lake Macquarie route and the extension of the Fernleigh Track from Belmont to Marks Point.
RMS will continue to work with councils in the development and implementation of bicycle networks.
