2876 - MANDATORY SEATBELTS ON SCHOOL BUSES

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Transport
  1. When will the findings of the advisory committee on bus safety, established 18 months ago, be released?
  2. Will the Minister implement mandatory seatbelts on school buses in response to the tragedy that occurred in Singleton on 10 September 2012?
  3. Why has industrial traffic been permitted to take over Singleton's road network?
Answer -
  1. to (3) I was deeply saddened to hear about the incident in Singleton on 10 September 2012.
My deepest sympathy goes out to the young boy's family and friends, classmates, and the Singleton community for their terrible loss. My thoughts are also with all others involved in the accident.
Last year the NSW Government formed the School Bus Safety Community Advisory Committee to independently examine the safe transportation of children in rural and regional NSW.
The committee comprises road safety experts, transport operators and parent and school associations. The committee is independently chaired by Carolyn Walsh, a Commissioner of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
I understand the independent committee will be in a position to hand its final report to the Government in the near future.
