4809 - PORT OF NEWCASTLE LEASE

Which services, including navigation and dredging, will be included in the Government's 99 year lease of the Port of Newcastle?

Answer -

Functions relating to the collection of wharfage, site occupation, navigation charges and port lease charges will be included in the long-term lease. This includes dredging and commercial control of scheduling of shipping movements, subject to the safety and regulatory control of the Harbour Master.

The State will retain a number of important maritime functions and services, including: Harbour Master and related Port Safety Operating License functions; pilotage; responsibility for dangerous goods approvals, marine pollution and emergency response; and administration of the existing coal chain Capacity Framework Arrangements at the port.
