4883 - HUNTER REGION CHILDREN IN CARE

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Family and Community Services, and Minister for Women
  1. How many foster children in the Hunter region are in the care of the Department of Family and Community Services (FACS)?
  2. How many foster children in the Hunter region are in the care of non-government agencies?
  3. Based on guidelines set by the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian, how regularly should FACS representatives visit children in foster care for welfare checks?
  4. Are current figures available of the rate of FACS visits to foster children in the Hunter region?
    1. If so, what are these figures?
    2. If not, why not?
Answer -

(1) -(2) Information and statistics about children and young people in out of home care is available in the Department's Annual Statistical Reports.

(3) - (4) The NSW Standards for Statutory out of home care (OOHC) are available on the Office of the Children's Guardian's website and are not prescriptive on how often children should be visited by their caseworker. This Government is delivering on Wood recommendations to transfer children in OOHC to the non- government sector. NGO's are able to provide regular home visits to children in OOHC.
