4443 - NEWCASTLE LIGHT RAIL

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Transport

What evidence regarding the feasibility of light rail was used to justify the Government's decision to commit to light rail in Newcastle?

Answer -

The Newcastle Light Rail project is a coordinated, whole-of-government decision to support the renewal of the Newcastle City Centre.

The NSW Government will direct $340 million from the 99 year lease of Newcastle Port to the revitalisation of Newcastle in addition to $120 million already committed by the government. A further $10 million has also been allocated as part of a broader light rail plan to investigate expanding light rail to surrounding suburbs and beaches in Newcastle.
