2285 - WAIT TIME IN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENTS

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Health

Considering that the Bureau of Health Information's report 'Activity and Performance in New South Wales Public Hospitals, July to September 2015', showed that 42 percent of John Hunter Hospital and 30 percent of Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospital patients waited more than 4 hours in emergency departments, what is the Minister doing to reduce waiting times at the hospitals?

Answer -

The results quoted in the Member's question relate to the proportion of patients where treatment in the Emergency Department is completed within four hours (Emergency Treatment Performance - ETP) rather than waiting times.

Both John Hunter and the Calvary Mater Newcastle Hospitals have introduced the Whole of Hospital program to streamline processes and communication so that patients are moved through the emergency department into hospital beds more quickly.
