2866 - WET WIPES IN SEWERS

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation

What action is the Minister taking to review the advertising on 'wet wipes' products to ensure that they are no longer advertised as 'flushable' when they do not degrade, cause significant detriment to the environment and can create a bill costing up to $15 million per year (Sydney Morning Herald, 25 February 2016)?

Answer -

NSW Fair Trading has referred the matter to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) which is currently investigating these types of products under the Australian Consumer Law (ACL) for false and misleading representations.

NSW Fair Trading is working with other State regulators and the ACCC to investigate claims by certain products which are advertised as 'flushable'.

The ACL prohibits businesses from making false or misleading representations regarding goods or services.
