1096 - HUNTER CRIME STATISTICS

Hornery, Sonia to the Attorney General, and Minister for Justice representing the Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Minister for the Hunter, and Vice-President of the Executive Council
  1. Do Hunter crime statistics for 2010 and 2011 indicate a surge in sex offences, in thefts from vehicles and in fraud offences?
  2. Will the Minister be addressing this increase in crime with a corresponding increase in police numbers to ensure the safety and well-being of Hunter residents?
Answer -

The NSW Police Force has advised me that Local Area Commands in the Hunter are working with partner agencies to reduce sexual assault through close monitoring of repeat offenders and persons on the Child Protection Register; educating the community on sexual assault prevention, including staging the Love Bites Program to reduce the number of sexual assaults involving youth; and ensuring that reports of indecent⁄sexual assault are appropriately investigated.

There is active targeting of steal from motor vehicle offending via increased patrols at peak times and hotspot locations with a focus on high risk and recidivist offenders. Major contributors in the fraud related category are computer related fraud and fail to pay for petrol, which are difficult to target with proactive policing. Nonetheless, Hunter police are monitoring and investigating these types of crime wherever they occur.
