6426 - 2014 HUNTER REGIONAL TRANSPORT PLAN PROJECTS

  1. What is the current status and cost of the Newcastle Local Government Area (LGA) project entitled "Safety works in King Street between Union Lane and Watt Street in Newcastle", listed under the Traffic Management and Road Safety Program in the 2014 Hunter Regional Transport Plan to commence in July 2013 with a cost of $423,000?
  2. What is the current status and cost of the Maitland LGA project entitled "Upgrade the New England Highway between the hospital and railway station roundabouts in Maitland (Election Commitment)" listed under the Traffic Management and Road Safety Program in the 2014 Hunter Regional Transport Plan with a cost of $41,710,000?
  3. What is the current status and cost of the Lake Macquarie LGA project entitled "Contribute to the Cardiff main street revitalisation project (election commitment)", listed under the Traffic Management and Road Safety Program in the 2014 Hunter Regional Transport Plan to commence in August 2013 with a cost of $2,200,000?
Answer -

I am advised:

  1. This project is now complete. The final cost of the project was $851,000, funded by the Commonwealth Government Black Spot Programme.
  2. The Government committed $45 million to this project through the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund.
  • Work at the hospital roundabout, including construction of slip lanes and installation of traffic lights, is complete.
  • Minor works at the railway station roundabout are complete, and further enabling works are underway in advance of overpass works.
  • A contract for construction of the overpass is expected to be awarded in December 2014, with construction expected to be complete in mid-2016.

(3) The Government committed $2.5 million to this project through the Hunter Infrastructure and Investment Fund.

  • Lake Macquarie City Council spent $300,000 on the project in 2012-13, and did design work at a cost of $240,000 in 2013-14.
  • Roads and Maritime Services allocated $1.969 million to Council for construction in 2014-15.
  • Council has advised Roads and Maritime Services that construction will begin before the end of 2014.
