1098 - CALVARY MATER HOSPITAL—CANCER TREATMENT AND RESEARCH CENTRE

  1. What has the Minister done to secure the vital cancer treatment and research centre at the Calvary Mater Hospital, given its election promise to purchase land next to the Calvary for the centre?
  2. Has the community identified this centre as a priority given the region's long waits for cancer treatment and the need for more medical oncologists?

I am advised:

  1. and (2) The Government is meeting its commitment through an allocation of $1 million included in the 2011⁄12 budget to commence the process of examining the land development opportunities, acquisition processes and identification of priorities as well as consultation and service planning.  Land has been secured by NSW Health with a five year call Option. 
    A study of the site and the Mater Campus is being undertaken to determine the optimum development opportunities for the precinct inclusive of the development needs for cancer treatment, a research centre, public and private health services generally and the necessary support facilities. 
    An initial report is scheduled to be available in December 2011 and the overall study will include community consultation to identify community concerns and priorities as well as the strategic directions for future development of the health precinct.
