8269 - WORKERS’ COMPENSATION

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Finance, Services and Property
  1. How many workers in New South Wales are currently covered by workers' compensation (as at 10 April 2018)?
    1. What is the average income of these workers?
Answer -
  1. Based on data from policy declaration filings provided to State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) by workers compensation insurers for 2016-17, as at 10 April 2018 there are 4.31 million employees covered by the New South Wales workers compensation insurance system. It is noted that, in addition, some New South Wales residents are employed by organisations covered by the Commonwealth Comcare scheme. The number of employees is based on data as at 31 March 2018.
    1. The average income (for workers compensation purposes) of these employees is $55,452. This amount is derived by dividing the number of employees (4.31 million) by $239 billion, which is the value of wages insured for 2016-17 as at 31 March 2018. (This may differ from the average wages recorded by other government bodies, such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics, based on definitional and timing differences).
