  2. What measures is the Government taking to address the increased incidents of violence and antisocial behaviour on buses operating throughout the Hunter
Answer -

I am advised:

  1. and (2) Violence and antisocial behaviour is unacceptable.
The NSW Government is committed to making our public transport network as safe as possible.
All regular route buses in Newcastle have security cameras and a $25 million three year program is being rolled out for the acquisition of new CCTV cameras and duress alarms on all regular route passenger bus services in Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong and the Central Coast. The funding will enable bus companies to install the latest security technology to their fleets and provide greater security to drivers and passengers.
Improved driver security screens are currently also being trialled as an initiative of the Bus Driver Safety Committee. The committee includes representatives of the Department of Transport, NSW Police Force, Bus and Coach Industrial Association, Transport Workers' Union of Australia, Rail Tram and Bus Union and the State Transit Authority. The trial is expected to continue until the end of 2011. A progress report will be provided to the Committee.
