10022 - SENIOR OPAL CARD DECLINE

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure

Considering the Opal Card figures have shown that there was a 7.3 per cent year-on-year drop in senior Opal card trips on Newcastle buses in the first four months of 2018, what is being done to stop the accelerating decline in bus patronage in Newcastle, particularly from the Wallsend electorate?

Answer -

I am advised:

Senior Opal card trips on Newcastle Transport have increased by 1.5 per cent since January 2018.

There has also been a 4.4 per cent increase in adult Opal card trips over the same period.

Newcastle Transport continues to engage with the community and will hold pop up information stalls in shopping centres in December 2018 to educate the community about the bus, ferry and light rail network together with Opal ticketing. Visits include Stockland Jesmond Shopping Centre in the Wallsend electorate on 7 December 2018.
