2841 - SECURITY FOR MENTAL HEALTH UNITS

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Health

What action is the Minister taking to ensure the safety of staff at the Calvary Mater Hospital Mental Health Unit, considering that there is no unit specific security staff and hospital security staff patrol the entire hospital, sometimes leaving the cleaning staff without protection?

Answer -

All staff can summon assistance by activating a duress alarm.

Hospital security staff located on the same campus as the Mental Health Centre are part of the Code Black response team, which responds to these alarms as a matter of priority.

All staff at the Mental Health Centre are encouraged to request the assistance of security and instigate a Code Black response when they feel personally threatened or unsafe. Staff are also encouraged to activate a Code Black early, rather than waiting for a situation to escalate.

Where the nurse unit manager or nurse in charge determines that there is a heightened level of risk within a mental health inpatient unit, non-clinical staff may be asked to leave the area or alternatively they may be accompanied by another staff member when performing their role.

012The Mater Mental Health Centre is also designed to allow all staff to enter through staff only corridors.
