543 - MEALS ON WHEELS—TRANSFER OF OVERSIGHT

Hornery, Sonia to the Minister for Ageing, and Minister for Disability Services
  1. When will the oversight of Meals on Wheels be transferred from the State to the Federal Government?
  2. Will home-cooked meals be banned in the Hunter in favour of frozen meals?
Answer -
  1. Under the Council of Australian Government's (COAG) national health reforms, NSW has agreed to a split of responsibilities for aged care and disability programs at age 65 (50 for Indigenous Australians) with the Commonwealth to assume full operational responsibility for aged care services under the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program from 1 July 2012. NSW will continue to retain operational responsibility for basic community care services, including Meals on Wheels, for people aged under 65 (Indigenous Australians aged under 50).
  2. No. Hunter Meals on Wheels services will not be banned from serving any style of meals. Although the bulk of meals will be frozen or cook-chilled, there will be facilities to heat and provide hot meals where this is required by a client.
