I am advised that the fixed speed camera on Newcastle Road, Jesmond was
decommissioned on 27 July 2011 following the release of the NSW
Auditor-General's Performance Audit - Improving Road Safety: Speed Cameras.
The audit identified that overall the NSW fixed speed camera program has
significantly reduced crashes. These results varied at some locations and
38 locations were identified where there had not been a consistent reduction in
crashes, injuries and fatalities.
Newcastle Road, Jesmond is one of the 38 locations where it was found that
the speed camera had not delivered the expected road safety benefits because
crashes and injuries at the camera location increased after the camera was
installed.
A safety review has been undertaken at this location to find alternative
safety measures for the existing road safety risks that were not being
addressed by the camera. The review findings and proposed program of works will
be developed by the end of March 2012.
