Discontinuation of the Oxford Street East Cycleway (OSEC) project to build a primary cycleway link between Taylor Square and Centennial Park

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, Oxford Street is a commercial arterial road that carries 33,000 vehicles (private, public transport, first responders, delivery, and trades) daily between Sydney City and the Eastern Suburbs. It will become the only NSW arterial road reduced in size and speed for a separated cycleway, compromising essential bus routes. The OSEC (Oxford Street East Cycleway) will irreparably damage the Paddington, Woollahra and Darlinghurst communities, local businesses and Eastern Suburbs accessibility by: 1. Reducing vehicle lanes from 2 lanes in each direction to 1 lane in each direction. 2. Removing fast transit for first responders traveling to hospitals, particularly St Vincent's, as cars will not be able to pull over. 3. Creating rat runs through the largest Southern Hemisphere Victorian heritage Conservation Area. 4. Reducing bus stops, making public transport less accessible. 5. Increasing risk of injury for anyone older, less mobile or with disabilities accessing bus transport. This disincentivises public transport use and contributes to higher levels of social isolation. 6. Reducing parking spaces on Oxford Street. 7. Increasing pressure on residential parking. OSEC is an unnecessary use of public funds. There is an existing cycleway on Moore Park Road between the Eastern Suburbs and Sydney City. The undersigned petitioners, therefore, ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to terminate the OSEC project, with the Oxford Street West Cycleway to continue from Taylor Square to Centennial Park gates via Flinders Street and Moore Park Road.
