Save Mullumbimby’s carpark and put the affordable housing in one of these alternative locations

To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, We, the undersigned petitioners, call on the Government to declare that Byron Shire Council's proposal for a 3-storey complex with 32 residential units plus shops on our public carpark at 57 Station Street Mullumbimby, is inappropriate because: 1. The site is flood-prone and fill will exacerbate flooding on neighbouring properties and roads; 2. Access to the site uses McGoughans Lane which is substandard at only 6 metres wide. The lane’s entry at Burringbar Street and exit at Tincogan Street are dangerous for pedestrians and drivers; 3. The proposal removes from the town centre, our public toilets and 43 public parking spaces. It provides only 20 private spaces for the 32 units and the shops; 4. The proposed building is several metres higher than the current height limit and than neighbouring buildings; 5. The building design is overbearing and inappropriate as a gateway to our town centre; 6. There are suitable sites available nearby, for example (i) Council’s carpark on Station Street, (ii) the decommissioned Mullumbimby Hospital site on Azalea Street, and (iii) state railway land on Prince Street. All three of these are larger than the current site, have safer access and would not require funding for land acquisition. The undersigned petitioners, therefore, ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to stop the project at 57 Station Street and to ask Council to consider alternate sites including those named above.
