To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
1 in 6 women and 1 in 16 men have experienced at least one incident of partner violence. 1 in 2 women have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace.
We all share the responsibility to drive forward Gender Equality and reduce sexual, domestic and family violence and harassment.
At best, the NSW Government has taken an incremental approach - a little funding here, one change there. At worst, this business-as-usual approach accepts women in NSW will face decades more violence and harassment. We won’t accept it.
We, the signers of this petition, call on the NSW Government to take serious and bold action to end gender inequality and sexual, domestic and family violence and harassment. The NSW Government should:
- Establish a NSW Gender Equality Agency with a mandate to report on the gendered impacts of laws and regulations. We should never again accept laws that adversely impact women;
- Support model gender equity clauses and conditions in all Awards and Enterprise Bargaining Agreements;
- Support through National Cabinet a positive duty for employers to prevent workplace sexual harassment and implement all 55 recommendations from the Sex Discrimination Commissioner to eliminated workplace harassment;
- Deliver a comprehensive NSW Gender Equity plan with strategies, measures and targets to achieve gender equality in NSW. This should include a 10-year primary prevention plan to dramatically reduce gendered violence; and
- Support consent education and primary prevention of violence training in workplaces, schools and universities.
