To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
1. The Tweed Shire community are very concerned with the rise of crime in the local area, and recently all the local community associations in the shire came together to discuss residents concerns.
2. The local police command addressed the meeting and were very helpful but they can only do what they can with the resources they currently have at their disposal.
3. The Tweed Coast is no longer a “country location”. It is a “growth area” yet local police stations in Murwillumbah and Kingscliff have either had their hours restricted, or been closed. Local police are now based in Tweed Heads – 30 minutes drive from centres like Murwillumbah and Pottsville. Additionally, Police have to contend with major policing issues that are created by the large (and growing) “city influence” of the Gold Coast, and the increase in population in Byron Bay.
4. The point we make is that the Police Command at Tweed is running on a “country budget” and having to contend with major policing issues associated with one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. This is having a detrimental effect on “local” policing. The Tweed Police command are doing their very best on limited resources. We request an increase in funding and resources to improve Police effectiveness in the area and to support the residents properly.
