Save Don Hearn's Cabins

Petitioner: Ms Lexie Meyer | Member: Butler, Liza | No. of Signatories: 3,814 | Date closed: 17/07/2024
To the Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly The Petition of those supporters of Don Hearn’s Cabins who are residents of New South Wales brings to the attention of the House the wilful degradation of an iconic South Coast small business as a direct consequence of prolonged inaction and neglect by the NSW Department of Lands and Property. Don Hearn’s Cabins is unique in its accessibility and affordability, providing alternative accommodation to both tourists and various community groups including for the socially disadvantaged. It is threatened with imminent demolition which would be a significant loss for surfers, local residents, the many families who have been holidaying there for several generations and visitors to the south coast. Despite the current lessee being placed on holding provision of a month-to-month lease at the expiration of her lease in March 2002, Lexie Meyer has managed to run her small business for a further twenty years, albeit severely limited in her ability to maintain/upgrade buildings and amenities. She has done this through resilience, resourcefulness, and the goodwill of her many supporters. The Department is asserting the cabins are at the end of their life and has suddenly become a bushfire risk. We the undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to rectify the situation by halting the proposed eviction and demolition, and insisting that a new long-term (25+ years) transferable lease be granted to the current lessee to enable the ongoing operation of Don Hearn’s Cabins.
