To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly, this petition of citizens of New South Wales brings to the attention of the House the negative social and economic consequences of government procurement being sent offshore by the State Government.
The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to direct the State Government to:
1. Direct all Departments, Agencies and State Owned Enterprises to incentivise procurement from businesses which can maximise the employment of local workers and the use of local materials.
2. Establish a government procurement policy framework which maximises local employment and local industry opportunities.
3. Establish a new government authority to monitor and enforce that government procurement policy.
4. Support future skills and training opportunities for young people and those retraining later in life by mandating an appropriate proportion of apprenticeship, trainee and cadetship positions in major government procurement contracts.
5. Ensure New South Wales taxpayers’ money is used to benefit the New South Wales economy and society through jobs growth, industry diversification, decentralisation, the expansion of export opportunities, and the elimination of skills-shortages.
