To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
Aboriginal housing was established in 1988 with the primary goal of providing quality, affordable housing to Indigenous communities, and we urge the Government to uphold this commitment.
We, the Indigenous community members of the Eurobodalla Shire, express our deep concerns regarding the inadequate living conditions and poor management of Indigenous housing by Searms Aboriginal Housing Corporation. Many Indigenous families in our community are homeless, living in substandard housing, and not having their cultural needs met under the current ownership of the Aboriginal housing office.
We are requesting immediate intervention and support to address the distress and inequality faced by our community. Specifically, we call for:
• Removing all housing stock tenders effective immediately from Searms Aboriginal Housing Corporation.
• Ensuring Indigenous tenants have access to a rent policy that is affordable.
• Upgrades and major works on all stock that aren't of quality standard.
• Supply of new quality housing stock to meet the needs of our community members.
• Approval of extensions for families living in overcrowding.
• Ensure no tenancy is transferred from mainstream to Indigenous chps without existing tenants' consent.
• An Aboriginal Housing Bill with specific objectives to improve housing stock, affordability and quality, while involving Aboriginal people in developing, determining and administering housing programs that directly affect them.
We ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to address Indigenous Housing issues with urgency to ensure equality and fairness for Indigenous people in the Eurobodalla Shire.
