To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
We the undersigned, residents of the State Electorate of Heathcote and surrounding suburbs, call on the NSW Transport Minister, Rob Stokes MP and Member for Heathcote, Lee Evans MP, to immediately withdraw the proposal to relocate the Engadine commuter car park announced in 2019 to Heathcote East.
We strongly object to the commuter car park on the eastern side of the train line at Heathcote East as:
- the suburb is surrounded on three sides by 15,000 hectares of the Royal National Park and many more hectares of bushland to the mountains in the west and has a single bridge access into the area.
- The State government is ignoring the advice from the Rural Fire Service and Sutherland Shire Council, who caution against increasing the population of Heathcote East, either in dwellings or in vehicles, because increasing the number of people puts us at risk and limits access for emergency vehicles.
- 210 spaces will endanger lives by adding to the time it will take to evacuate the area when bush fire threatens and,
- there was no community consultation with the residents or the Council prior to this proposal being announced.
The suburb is gridlocked when motorists try to exit now. Therefore, we request the proposal be immediately withdrawn and community consultation commence to identify a more appropriate and safe position for a commuter car park in the local area.
