To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
NSW toll roads currently have two classes of vehicle for the charging of tolls, Class A and Class B.
Drivers of motorhome vehicles (where the height of the vehicle is in excess of 2.8m) are currently charged on NSW toll roads as a Class B vehicle even though many of them are less than 4.5 tonnes in weight and can be driven with a standard Class C driver's license. Many small motorhomes exceed the current 2.8m height limit by as little as 20cm due to the front sleeping compartment, or air-conditioning unit installed on the roof. This means they are charged the same as the largest vehicles that commute on our roads (e.g. Truck with Dog Trailer which can be up to 19m in length).
Owners of motorhomes are often senior citizens and for them the Class B tolls are excessive. Motorhomes are mostly registered for "private use" and generally only use toll roads to transition to their next destination, not on a day-to-day basis like a similarly sized commercial vehicle. The Class B tolls encourage motorhome drivers to navigate through suburban streets to avoid the toll system completely, potentially causing road safety and congestion issues.
The undersigned petitioners therefore respectfully request that the Legislative Assembly call on the Ministers for Transport and Treasury to amend the toll system so that drivers of motorhomes which are registered for "private use" are charged as a Toll Class A vehicle.
