To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
The Northern Rivers and North Coast of NSW have a disproportionate number of Indigenous youth in contact with the criminal justice system. We desperately need a Youth Koori court in Lismore to service the surrounding regions so we can reduce the number of Indigenous youth in contact with the criminal justice system.
Koori courts help Indigenous youth to feel that their culture matters and is respected. Koori courts help kids get back on track and away from the criminal justice system.
Koori courts focus on rehabilitation not punishment. They have proved to be successful in turning Indigenous youths lives around and connect them back with their elders, community and culture.
Koori courts reduce the likelihood of youth ending up in adult custody and reducing the risk of another Aboriginal death in custody.
Please establish a Koori court in Lismore.
