To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
Members of the NSWNMA (Nurses and Midwives Association) CMN (Calvary Mater Newcastle) branch urge the NSW Government to name CMN and other AHOs (Affiliated Health Organisations) on the schedule for the first funding tranche of the Safe Staffing Levels (SSL) currently being implemented at NSW public hospitals with level 5 and 6 Emergency Departments (ED).
CMN is a fully funded public hospital with a 24/7 level ED working in partnership with HNELHD to care for our community’s most vulnerable patients. CMN offers specialised services such as toxicology and mental health and is the major cancer care centre for HNELHD.
Implementing SSL at CMN must be a priority. With almost one in two Australians likely to be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, many people within our community may rely on the services offered at our much-loved hospital.
If CMN is not included on the list for funding at the same or comparable time as other Level 5 and 6 ED’s across the District, it will be impossible to retain or recruit enough nurses, and our community will experience significant service inequities.
We ask the Legislative Assembly to call on the Government to include CMN and other AHOs on the schedule for the first tranche of funding for Safe Staffing Levels (SSL) to ensure fair and equal conditions for nurses, patients, and the community. Our nurses just want hope!
