To the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly,
Corrective Services are failing to reduce incarceration rates.
Many people are incarcerated on Remand. The term innocent until proven guilty no longer exists. The prison system is choking on cases waiting to be heard in court.
Many inmates are suffering abuse whilst incarcerated. Prison guards are also at risk of being assaulted and have claimed it is beyond their control. Medications are often delayed or denied all together. People have suffered greatly and even died as a result.
Inmates are released without adequate support and are traumatised from their time in prison. This leaves them vulnerable to a recidivism cycle. Inmates and their families along with Professionals who support these people need to be given opportunity to speak and be heard. We need a full investigation into what is going wrong in the sector and why. We need solutions to resolve and end mass incarceration and building of more prisons that are failing to correct people. We request a royal commission into corrective services.
