About the Budget Estimates inquiry
Ministers and senior public servants attend an annual Budget Estimates inquiry to answer questions about the expenditure, performance and effectiveness of their agencies.
Budget Estimates is a key process for government accountability and transparency. The Budget Estimates inquiry involves detailed questioning on the decisions, actions and advice of ministers and public servants.
The Budget Estimates inquiry is conducted by the Legislative Council’s seven Portfolio Committees.

Budget Estimates 2022-2023
The Budget Estimates and related papers for 2022-2023 were referred by the House to the Portfolio Committees for inquiry and report on 22 June 2022.
The following dates have been set aside for hearings:
Initial hearings
| 22 August to 7 September 2022

Supplementary hearings
| 24 October to 28 October 2022

Attendance at Budget Estimates hearings
Budget Estimates hearings are open to the public and are webcast live on the Parliament's website.
Supplementary hearings 2022
According to the terms of reference adopted on 22 June 2022 supplementary hearings of the Budget Estimates inquiry are to be held over five days from 24 to 28 October 2022.
Each Portfolio Committee has considered whether to hold supplementary hearings, with resolutions having been made in relation to each portfolio, except Corrections.
According to the resolutions of the committees, the schedule for the supplementary hearings is as follows:

Initial hearings 2022
According to the terms of reference adopted on 22 June 2022 initial hearings of the Budget Estimates inquiry were held over 13 days from 22 August 2022 to 7 September 2022 as detailed in the tables below. Additionally, according to a resolution adopted on 21 September 2022, the postponed Corrections hearing has been rescheduled, and is to be held on 24 October 2022. The schedule for the initial hearings is as follows:
